Turf Installation

Turfwokz is your local turf installation specialist. We are ‘Grow Safe Qualified’ and have a true passion for turf.

SPRAY the site first if weeds are a problem using Roundup or a similar non-residual herbicide. Leave this for 7 - 14 days to ensure the best result has been achieved and a follow up spray may be required.

CULTIVATE the site by digging or using a rotary hoe to a depth of 100mm. This is often avoidable on new sites where fresh topsoil has just been applied.

LEVEL the site using a board, rake or screed. Add soil if necessary to fill any hollows or low spots. Allow 10mm around your edges to allow for the thickness of the turf.

CONSOLIDATE the area by tramping by foot or using a light garden roller. This is important to ensure moisture retention is adequate and to ensure that the surface does not deteriorate after installation. Once completed it may be necessary to give the soil a final rake to smooth out any imperfections in the surface.

FERTILISE the entire area with an even application of Pre-Plant fertiliser at 35grams/m2 which we have available from one of our friendly staff when you place your order.

LAY your turf in a staggered brick like fashion, preferably starting from a straight edge. The turf must be laid immediately upon delivery and should be stored in a cool or shady site. Ensure that all edges and ends are tightly butted together and cut and trim any surplus ends using a sharp knife.

ROLL your lawn after installation to ensure that there is good contact between the turf and the soil. This is best achieved by the use of a light garden roller.

WATER the turf within 30 minutes of installation. Maintain watering up to saturation point until the turf is firmly rooted. Ideally, watering should occur in the morning with a light spray at the hottest part of the day (2.00pm - 3.00pm) during summer just to remove the heat from the surface. Avoid ponding of water especially on hot sunny days as that water will heat up and scorch the grass. Watering should exceed the rate of evapotranspiration, which is the rate at which water is lost from the soil and plant system. In the height of summer this water loss can exceed 6mm per day. To ensure this is being done, place a dish on the lawn when the sprinkler is going to accurately determine exactly how much water you are actually applying.

MOW your new lawn little and often after installation. The first cut should occur within seven (7) days of installation with ideally follow up cuts occurring every 5 - 6 days. Always remove the litter by using a catcher. Ensure that your mower blades are sharp so that leaf blade is cut rather than torn. As a rule of thumb remove no more than 20% of the total leaf area with each cut and maintain cutting heights at between 25mm - 30mm.

Irrigation

Why Install an Irrigation System?

Whilst water conservation is always important, being water wise doesn't mean you have to have a brown desert for a yard, but it does mean using a precious resource like water wisely. With up to 60% of household water consumption used on lawns and gardens, installing an automatic home irrigation system is the best action you can take to control your outdoor water usage. You'll also enjoy the added advantage of unsurpassed vigorous and healthy plant growth with controlled and even watering.

Our design and consultation service produces a plan specifically for your property, whether it be a basic manual system, or the more high-tech, fully automated multi-zone irrigation system. The first step is an accurate property assessment where we meet on site to discuss your options. We analyse soil type, and take note of exposure to the sun, shade and/or wind factors and collect the following important information;

  • Plant selection

  • Location of the water and power supply

  • The location of driveways, paving and paths

  • Existing water supply test

  • Suitable location of controller

  • Possible future extensions.

An accurate plan of your property is designed and each of your garden 'zones' are identified. Each 'Zone' requires different amounts of water - lawns require different watering to gardens - and we also consider specific themes such as wetlands, dry coastal plantings or hardy shrub areas and utilise the best irrigation product to suit.

We have an experienced team of Irrigation Technicians for the installation, alternatively we supply the plans and all materials if you prefer to install your system yourself.

Once installed, we'll check the system is working to maximum efficiency and ensuring even coverage, and then assist to programme the controller. We can also regularly service your system as required.
